Swigert Suter “Sonny” Hockensmith, 83, husband of 50 years to Gladys Polly Hockensmith, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, April 25, 2022 at Baptist Health in Lexington after a short illness.
He was born in Frankfort, KY to the late John Glover Hockensmith, Sr. and Margaret Shortridge Suter Hockensmith. He was a member at Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg and a proud Kentucky Colonel. He served in the National Guard for 6 years; graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1956; obtained his Bachelors and Masters Degree from Georgetown College where he graduated in 1961; and taught for 33 years at Fort Knox High School.
Swigert was a patriot of his country and enjoyed the ever changing political scene. He enjoyed gardening, his family, church and beloved members of his class from Elkhorn High School and his two yorkie dogs. He was a part of all things UK, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.
Along with his wife he is survived by two daughters, Dena Dawson McNabb and Susanna Lee Hafner, both of Lawrenceburg; 12 grandchildren, Kelly, Katie and David (Victoria) Dawson, Patrick (Sarah) Sea, Ashley (Dustan) Drury, Andrew McNabb, Emilie (Cameron Woolums) McNabb, Brett and Evan Tanner, and Gabriela Hafner; 7 great-grandchildren, Hunter and Anthony Dawson, Ashton Drury, Elliott Sea, Carter Sea, Gracelynn Drury and Eli Winder; brother, Francis (Barbara) Hockensmith, of Frankfort; sisters-in-law, Fay, Barbara and Glenda; brother-in-law, Leslie; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hockensmith was preceded in death by sister, Sally Gayle; infant sister, Margaret Hockensmith; brother, John Hockensmith; and son, Paul Anthony Dawson.
Funeral service will be Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Central Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rick Clark and Bro. Brad Hockensmith officiating. Burial will follow in North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Gash Memorial Chapel and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the church.
Casket bearers will be Timothy Hockensmith, Chad Hockensmith, Todd Hammonds, Evan Tanner, Matt Renkey and David Dawson. Honorary bearers are Lee Bishop, Joe Sipes, Steve McNabb, Andrew McNabb, Cameron Woolums, Brett Tanner, Hunter Dawson, Anthony Dawson, and Ashton Drury.
