Dorothy Lee Thompson, the heart of our family, peacefully departed this world on April 23rd, 2026. While her passing into eternal rest leaves a void that only her enormous love could fill, we rejoice knowing she has been embraced by her Savior and reunited with those who went before her.
Born on July 8th, 1930 in Bath County, KY to Willie and Bertie Morgan, she attended and graduated from Athens High School. She began working at Woolworth’s and afterward worked for Bell Telephone Company which, to those who knew her, was the most fitting job. Years later, she worked in the cafeteria for the public school system for 27 years before retiring.
She attended church with her friends at Boones Creek Baptist Church where she met her future husband, Gordon Parker Thompson. He had just returned from military service and they married on October 28th, 1949.
Gordon began his life-long career in farming in Fayette and Jessamine County, with Dorothy’s encouragement and support. She had three girls who cherished their upbringing on the farm. They were exemplary parents, instilling their love of the Lord into their daughters. Dorothy read devotions and her Bible daily and revered the power of prayer. She and Gordon were devoted members of their church in which their children and grandchildren were raised.
Her greatest happiness was caring for her three grandchildren. They experienced idyllic childhoods, playing on acres of farmland and learning from their “Tutu” and Papaw.
A social butterfly, Dorothy was known for treasuring camaraderie; she never met a stranger and any form of visiting, talking, and laughing fed her soul. She loved bringing people together through her cooking and award-winning pies, and contributing to her Wilmore community.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband Gordon, her siblings Ed, Christine, Mary Ellen, Anna, and Millard, and her daughter Amy Edwina.
She is survived by her children Linda Carol and Cathy Parker, her grandchildren Dusty, Jordan, and Cassie, her great-grandchildren Noah, Mia, and Calloway, as well as her beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Dorothy’s love for children, we request any donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Throughout her 96 years, she built a life centered on family, friendship, food, and faith. She will be immeasurably missed by all who knew her, and the legacy she forged will live on forever.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Wilmore Free Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service. Burial will follow in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.
Noon & Son Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with final arrangements.
