Ronald Venon Whitaker

Ronald Venon “Tiny” Whitaker, age 73, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was born May 14, 1944 andspent his early childhood in Letcher County, Kentucky. 

As the son of an educator, he spent his school years in various towns throughout the state. In Trimble County at the age of seven, he was recognized as one of the youngest basketball officials in the United States. He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School in 1962 after a successful football career that included selection as a member of the 1960 Courier-Journal  All-State Football Squad, and went on to attend Eastern Kentucky University.

He married his wife Sandi in 1969, and the pair eventually settled in Lawrenceburg to raise their children.  They embraced the community, forging many dear friendships.  Ron donated his time and talents as a coach, Parks and Recreation director, and volunteer. 

Ron worked in a wide variety of fields ranging from coal mining and restaurant management to owning his own business, but he spent the majority of his career in and around the construction industry. He retired in 2010 from a sales position at Oldcastle Precast.

He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, woodworking, cooking, home improvement projects, and spending time with his family.In his retirement, he was an active member of Frankfort Elks Lodge #530, focusing his energy on community projects that benefit veterans and kids. 

Ron is survived by his wife Sandi, a son Ron (Anita) Whitaker of Lawrenceburg, a daughter Lisa Whitaker of Lexington, a grandson Logan Whitaker of Lawrenceburg, and sisters Dee Foster and Janet Whitaker, both of Lexington. He is also survived by mother-in-law Colleen Walton, sister-in-law Darla (Mike) Fisher, brothers-in-law Ed (Sandie) Walton, Jeff (Deanna) Walton, and Shawn Walton, uncles Glenn Whitaker, Tom Whitaker, and Jim Boyd, aunts Peg Adams and Gladys Hogg, and various nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Venon and EthlynWhitaker, brother Terrell Whitaker, father-in-law H.C. Walton, sister-in-law Dede Walton, brother-in-law James P. Foster, and many beloved aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held at the Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg on Tuesday, August 22 at 7 PM. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM. Memorials may be made to Frankfort Elks Lodge #530, c/o Ron Whitaker Memorial Fund, 309 Lewis Street, Frankfort, KY 40601.
